Whimsical Christmas Carol Card Illustrations Inspired by Winter Wildlife

There is something magical about a Christmas card that feels like a tiny winter scene you can hold in your hand. A small Hare wishing on a star while snow gently falls. A robin singing his heart out, heralding the special season. Badgers asleep in their sett, while the snow falls above ground. These are the little moments that inspired my collection of 'Christmas Carol' cards, created as festive cards for sending and keeping.

This collection brings together two of my favourite things about the season: traditional Christmas Carols and British wildlife. Each design is named after a familiar carol, with a whimsical animal at the heart of the scene. The result is a set of Christmas cards that feel a bit nostalgic, heartfelt, and just a little enchanted!

My Christmas card collection rooted in carols and woodland stories

Christmas carols have a way of carrying memories. They bring back school concerts, candlelit services, family gatherings, and the cosy feel of a Christmas Eve. I wanted each card to capture a little of that feeling without illustrating the carols too literally.

When I initially started painting the series, the aim was to draw attention to wildlife in the British wintertime. The first picture I painted was of a Hare wishing on a bright star. I titled it 'All is calm all is bright' taken from the carol 'Silent Night' so then every year after that I came up with new ideas for Christmas cards and decided to give them all titles of Christmas carols. A Red Squirrel asleep in his drey amongst the green leaves and berries became 'The Holly and the Ivy'. Three Owls huddling together beneath a snowy sky became 'In the Bleak Midwinter' . And for the last illustration in the series this year, I wanted woodland wildlife coming together to watch in wonder at a bright shining star above them, which, naturally became 'O Come all ye faithfull'.

The wildlife behind the illustrations

Winter wildlife has its own kind of Christmas magic. Bare branches make birds easier to spot. Foxes leave tracks across frosty gardens. Deer stand out against pale frosty fields. Robins appear like tiny sparks of colour on grey mornings.

Some of the illustrations are bold and characterful, while others are quiet and hidden away. I wanted them to feel whimsical, but still rooted in nature, with wildlife that many of us recognise.

  • A Hedgehog hibernating in the leaves- Away in a Manger

  • A Fox curled up asleep in their den- Silent Night

  • Long tailed Tits perched on a branch - We Three Kings

  • A sleepy Dormouse nestled among berries, leaves, and festive greenery - God rest ye Merry

Each animal has its own mood. Some designs feel quiet and peaceful. Some feel playful. Some have that rustic, subterranean feel, of the earth and leaves or the crisp cold intake of breath on a magical wintery day.

Why carol names make the cards feel special

Naming the cards after traditional Christmas carols gives each illustration an extra layer of meaning. A card can be enjoyed simply as a pretty winter wildlife scene, but the title adds a festive connection.

It also makes choosing a card more personal. Someone who loves to send a 'message' might be drawn to the card 'All is Calm all is bright'. A person who enjoys bright, classic Christmas imagery might prefer something named after 'Hark the Herald' . A beautiful design can carry the spirit of a joyful carol without needing to spell everything out.

I love that balance. The carol titles offer a nod to tradition, while the animal illustrations keep the collection original, modern and distinctive.

These are cards for people who enjoy Christmas, but prefer something softer than glittery slogans or loud festive show. They suit mantelpieces, card strings, kitchen shelves, and little frames after Christmas has passed.

Cards made for sending and keeping

A Christmas card is a small thing, but it can mean a lot. It says someone thought of you. It just catches a moment in the middle of a busy time. It can travel across the country, sit beside a gift under your tree or given to someone to brighten up their Christmas .

That is why I wanted this collection to feel unique and thoughtful. These original illustrations are festive, but not throwaway. They are designed to be enjoyed before Christmas, during , and even after the decorations come down.

A few lovely ways to use them include:

  • Sending one to a friend who loves wildlife

  • Pairing a card with a handmade or locally bought gift

  • Framing a favourite design as a small seasonal print

  • Tucking one into a parcel for an extra personal touch

  • Collecting a matching set of a British artists work

The designs work well whether you like to write long messages or just a simple little note. The cards are all blank inside with the name of the Christmas Carol on the reverse. The illustration carries a message of seasonsl greeting before the card is even opened.

A gentle kind of Christmas decoration

One of my favourite things about illustrated cards is how they become part of Christmas decorations. They do not need much space. They bring colour to a shelf, a windowsill, or a mantelpiece. They can sit beside candles, pinecones, or a small vase of winter greenery.

I think the wildlife theme also means the cards fit beautifully with natural Christmas decorations. Think brown paper parcels, twine, fir branches, wooden ornaments, and warm twinkling white lights. All very natural. The cards are printed on fsc assured card so they are sustainable products too and the packaging is all recyclable..

If you prefer a woodland-inspired Christmas style, these cards were made with that in mind. They add a touch of festive charm without being overpowering or showy.

Choosing your favourites from the collection

The collection is available in my shop, ready for anyone who wants Christmas cards with a little more character and care. You can choose designs that match the person receiving them, or pick a set to keep on hand for December. If you are like me, there's always someone you forget!

When choosing, think about the feeling you want to send.

Peaceful cards suit quiet messages and faraway friends. The cheerful Robin design is lovely for neighbours, teachers, and family. Hedgehogs, Red Squirrels and Badgers make wonderful choices for nature lovers.

The best card is the one that feels like it belongs to the person receiving it. That small moment of recognition is part of the joy. 'Oh I love Dormice! They are so cute." These are words I hear at markets when people are buying my cards. "So and so loves her birds in the garden" "I can't decide which one I love the best" - It means a lot to me to hear people respond to the cards in such a positive , lovely way.
